Abstract
The purpose of this study is as follows:
(1) To verify whether gingival tissue is a reservoir for herpes simplex virus in man as reported by Zakay-Rones, Z. et al., (40).
(2) To determine whether the presence of virus in saliva is correlated with the presence of viral antigen in gingival tissue.
(3)To determine whether gingival surgery will induce reactivation of infectious herpes simplex virus in the mouth (as indicated by the appearance of infectious virus in the saliva after gingival surgery).
Blood, throat washings (T.W.) and gingival sulcular epithelium of 23 patients were studied. Seventeen out of 23 (74%) had neutralizing antibodies for HSV as determined in rabbit kidney tissue culture.
T.W. of these 17 patients with antibodies were tested for the presence of HSV as indicated by cytopathogenic-C.P.E.change in tissue culture. None of these patients showed C.P.E. change in their baseline specimens, indicating that HSV is not present in the saliva between recurrences of herpetic attacks. Two of these 17 patients (12%) showed C.P.E. change in their weekly recall specimens. This suggests that dental surgery may have reactivated HSV.
Preliminary immunofluorescence test of slides prepared from the gingival tissues showed no clear evidence of herpes antigen.
