Abstract
The purpose of this research project was to identify some of the educational needs of beginning psychiatric nurses at a particular hospital in Eastern Canada. The conceptual framework for the project was delineated from Lewin's Change Theory and Knowles' Adult Learning Theory and was related to psychiatric nursing. The research approach was needs assessment. Data collection methods included an interview and a rating scale developed by the researcher. Medical-surgical nurses who will work on a new inpatient psychiatric unit constituted the sample. Results indicate that beginning psychiatric nurses perceive their learning needs to be great in the majority of the domains represented in the data collection instruments. Consideration of these learning needs will be helpful in planning a comprehensive orientation program for the nurses involved.
