Abstract
The intention of this study was to determine the role that supra-alveolar crest fibers play in spontaneous closure of the midline diastema during maxillary expansion therapy. Eighteen pre-adolescent children participated in this study and of these nine underwent surgical transsection of supra-alveolar crest fibers between the maxillary central incisors. Angular and linear measurements were taken from cephalometric radiographs and plaster casts at the pre-activation, stabilization, and post-retention periods of expansion therapy. These measurements were considered to be variables which might be related to diastema closure. It was found that surgical transsection of supraalveolar crest fibers made no significant effect, if any, on diastema closure. Furthermore, there was no correlation between diastema closure and any one of the angular and linear variables.
