Abstract
Dental pain and hypersensitivity can occur as a result of marginal leakage between the tooth and the restoration. Many studies have been conducted to evaluate marginal leakage. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of simulated masticatory force on the marginal leakage of complete cast crowns cemented with two different cements.
Forty extracted maxillary molars were divided into four groups: (1) group IA, zinc phosphate cement, not loaded; (2) group IB, zinc phosphate cement, loaded; (3) group IIA, Panavia cement, not loaded; (4) group IIB, Panavia cement, loaded. The loaded groups were tested with a custom-made device at 42,120 load cycles and a rate of 1.3 Hz with a force of 108 N. Loaded and nonloaded groups were immersed in dye solution for twenty-four hours and were sectioned to score dye penetration.
The data were statistically analyzed and the following results were obtained: (1) group I A resulted in more dye penetration than group II A (p [less than]0.01); (2) group I B showed more dye penetration than group II B (p[less than]0.05); (3) group I A recorded less dye penetration than group I B (p[less than]0.01); (4) group II A produced less dye penetration than group II B (p[less than]0.05). (5) The differences in dye penetration between buccal and lingual margins were also evaluated and were not statistically significant (p=0.3270 for zinc phosphate cement, p=0.3613 for Panavia cement).
