Abstract
Evidence for the nature of spontaneous variations in the peripheral circulation has been obtained from a review of the literature on the subject, supplemented by observation in the laboratory, under the direction of Professor Brenton R. Lutz, of the exposed mesentery and bladder of the frog.
Contractility of the arterioles, with typical circularly arranged smooth muscle ceils and abundant sympathetic innervation, is generally accepted. The controversial point has been how important a role the capillary, with its longitudinally arranged adventitial cells and sparse sympathetic supply, plays in variations in the peripheral distribution of blood.
