A histologic study and description of the pulp and root development in human dentition

Abstract
A series of human fetal tissue and postpartum specimens were studied histologically to observe pulpal and root development. The tissues were of ages between eleven and forty weeks after conception. Post partum specimens of age two months, three months, six months, one year, and two years were also examined. The tissues were prepared for histologic sectioning in the usual manner. Sections were accomplished in cross, sagital and transverse planes. The slides were then stained with either Harris hematoxylin and eosin, modified one step trichom for fine connective tissue and modified Goldman Bloom for fibrous connective tissue. Pictures of the sections were obtained via the light microscope. They included a sequence of the pulpal tissue development and the root development. The different cellular and vascular aspects of the pulp at different stages were observed. The specimens also permitted the study of root development. The epithelial Hertwig’s root sheath was found in the forty weeks embryo and in the post partum specimens; proving its existence in the human dentition. Some extracted teeth, with complete and incomplete root formation, were also prepared for histologic examination under the light microscope. The mature pulpal tissue was observed and Hertwig’s epithelial root sheath was still present in the teeth with incomplete root formation. From an endodontic point of view, the histologic study of human dental tissue leads to a better understanding of tooth development; specifically of the pulpal development and root formation. This will then, help the clinician perform a better treatment and obtain a one hundred percent successful result.
