Abstract
The focus of this project was to determine the state of dental health education in the private sector. A selected sample of dental practices in Massachusetts towns, targeted for major marketing by Massachusetts Dental Project was surveyed. Dental health education was defined, then described as it exists in the private sector. The review of the literature reveals some of the elements of dental health education and the methods used in patient education. Questionnaires were mailed to 393 dentists in general dental practices. Among the information gathered is what dental health education information is being taught, what communication methods are used to present dental health education, which staff member in the dental office is responsible for teaching dental health education, and what innovative techniques are being used.
