Abstract
Tihis study was undertaken to evaluate by a number of different
scoring methods the health of the gingiva around temporary acrylic
crowns. A total of 50 crowns were studied from male patients at the Prosthetics Clinic of Boston University School of Graduate Dentistry.
It was found that the health of the gingiva did not depend on the
location of the margin of the temporary crown, i.e. whether the crown
mar.gin was subgingival ori at the gingival margin.
The accumulation of caltulus on the crowns was found to be r.elated
to the smoothness of the crown surface, and also to the or.al hy.g1ene
ability of the patient.
The best index for evaluating gingival health was found to be
that developed by Orban and Stallard (1968). This method involved
obtaining a sample of tissue, with the use of a curette, from the gingival
sulcus. The resulting biopsy specimen was placed on a glass
slide, fixed, and stained by hematoxylin and eosin. This was examined
under the microscope and the biopsy evaluated in regard to the numbers... [TRUNCATED]
