Abstract
Bite force was compared between a group of 51 complete denture wearers (male and female aged 46-91 years), and a control group of 47 dentate subjects (male and female, aged 18-46 years), using a "T-Scan" instrument to measure maximum biting force and a questionnaire to evaluate satisfaction with dentures. The computerized diagnostic system "T-Scan" enabled an objective analysis of dental occlusion and provided a quantitative basis for comparing bite forces. Two levels of bite force were recorded for both groups (Light bite and Maximum bite). The questionnaire explored patients' opinions with respect to their ability to chew food, the fit or comfort of the dentures during chewing, grinding or clenching during night or day, temporomandibular joint pain, aesthetics of the dentures, and general satisfaction with the dentures. No significant differences in bite force values for complete denture wearers and the dentate control group were found for either light bite or maximum bite. The study revealed a difference in the ability to chew food (p=0.001) between the two groups. Of the complete denture wearers 19.6% reported that they could not chew food with their dentures. Subjects with natural dentition reported more grinding or clenching and temporomandibular joint pain than those with complete dentures. In the complete denture group reduced chewing ability was reported more frequently by subjects who felt their dentures did not fit.
