Abstract
Super Elastic Nickel Titanium wire has two unique characteristics - shape memory and super elasticity - which make the wire highly elastic and deliver relatively constant forces subscript 2-5. This in vitro study was designed to determine the load-deflection properties of Super-Elastic Nickel Titanium wires and coils. The study was composed of four sections:(1)The five point bending of arch wires (2) Tensile test of pull coil springs (3) Compression test of push coil springs (4) Compression test of looped wires. The load-deflection curve of each test was compared to assess springback, permanent deformation, and super elastic properties. The results revealed that: all super-elastic Nickel Titanium arch wires show some degree of permanent deformation when the wires are bent 2 mm and 4 mm in the five point bending system. The average force of the 150 gram Sentalloy pull coil at the beginning of space closure is 300.1 grams. The 300 gram Sentalloy pull coil generates 775.1 grams at the beginning of space closure. Both push coil spring products made for the Jones jig and Sentalloy light coil springs show some super-elastic properties. Neo Sentalloy 200 gram looped wire generates less force and less permanent deformation compared to Neo Sentalloy 100 gram wire.
