Abstract
Myofascial pain-dysfunction syndrome, according to Bonica (1957),
constitute a group of disorders characterized by the presence of a
hypersensitivity area (trigger area) in one of the muscles or in the
connective tissue, together with a specific syndrome of pain, muscle
spasm, tenderness, stiffness, limitation of aotion, weakness, and occasionally
autonomic dysfunction in an area of reference (the Target area),
which is usually at some distance from the trigger area. The group of
syndroaes have been mapped by Travell and Rinzler 1n 1952.
A group of 22 patients with myofascial pain-dysfunction syndrome,
ranging from 19 to 55 year old, were treated with acupuncture. The symptoms
ranged from 2 to 7.5 years at the time of the treatment.
Satisfactory results with coaplete relief of pain were obtained in
17 patients, poor results in 3 patients, in whoa the psychologenic problem
was the aajor factor and no results were observed in 2 patients.
Based on the results, acupuncture aust be considered a valuable adjunct
to the treatment of ayofascial pain-dysfunction syndrome.
