Thalamic projections to baso-ventral and medio-dorsal subsectors of the prefrontal cortex in the rhesus monkey

Abstract
Thalamic projections to base-ventral (areas 11 , 1 2 and ventral area 46) arrl mediCHiorsal (area 32 arrl dorsal area 8) prefrontal cortices were studied with horseradish peroxidase ( HRP) in rhesus monkeys. These areas constitute parts of a base-ventral arrl a mediodorsal axis of gradual laminar differentiation observed within the prefrontal cortex (Barbas and Parrlya, 1982). r.bst labeled thalamic neurons in each brain were found in the medial dorsal nucleus (MD). Base-ventral regions received projections predaninantly fran central and ventral portions of MD while mediCHiorsal prefrontal regions received projections predaninantly fran dorsal portions of MD. Tlhalamic nuclei including medial pulvinar, intralaminar, anterior, midline and ventral anterior also projected to the prefrontal cortex. The origin of thalamic projections seemed to be correlated with the architectonic differentiation of the prefrontal target areas. Projections fran MD directed to the less differentiated areas in ooth axes (area 11 and area 32) originated primarily in the magnocellular, whereas projections directed to the more differentiated areas (area 46 and area 8) originated primarily in the parvocellular and multifonn divisions of MD. The less differentiated orbital prefrontal cortices received projections primarily from posterior and medial portions of MD and the medial pulvinar while the rrore differentiated prefrontal areas received projections predominantly from the anterior and lateral sectors. The results suggest that the pattern of thalamic projections to the prefrontal cortex is correlated with the degree of architectonic differentiation of the prefrontal regions studied, and with the base-ventral or medio-dorsal location of each prefrontal target region.
