Abstract
A shrinking "college age" population, along with rapidly rising tuition costs, have caused American colleges and universities to experience sharp declines in their enrollments. This decline has also affected graduate school enrollments, forcing university admissions offices to employ more aggressive student recruiting practices. Utilizing alumni to help identify and attract prospective students to the school is an inexpensive and effective way to bolster enrollments. The literature describes that a successful alumni recruitment program must include a clear statement of its’ goals and objectives, a defined organizational structure, maintenance of current alumni records, determination of specific activities, selection of participants, training of participants, evaluation of program results, and encouragement and recognition for volunteers. This project established the foundation for a comprehensive alumni recruitment program for the Dental Public Health Program at Boston University. The goals of the Dental Public Health Alumni Recruitment Program were established. An organizational structure was created, and consists of an Alumni Recruitment Advisory Committee and an Alumni Recruitment Program Director. Alumni participants were selected and a training program was developed which is comprised of an alumni recruitment manual and workshops. Guidelines for continuing communication with alumni volunteers as well as methods for evaluating the Alumni Recruitment Program were established.
