Abstract
This thesis focuses on state-firm relationships under authoritarianism. It follows theimpact of state capacity both on the firm and on the market. It follows three companies in their interactions with the Chinese and Russian governments: Didi, Google China, an Yandex. It finds that though the state’s capacity and the firm’s reliance on the market can explain outcomes, a firm’s culture can shape the nuances in those interactions. Additionally, if the firm’s culture is oppositional toward the state, an increase of state capacity makes the firm exit as opposed to comply with the state’s demands.
