Abstract
In recent years, the field of dental education has become more challenging than ever before. The emergence of an aging population, new disease patterns and advances in materials and equipment have placed greater demands on dental schools to graduate dentists who can quickly adapt to change while providing quality care. Rising tuition, inflation, and a decline in the applicant pool have forced dental schools to create innovative ways of defraying expenses for students, and to develop strategies to attract applicants from a smaller number of qualified college graduates. Dental school administrators are finding themselves concerned with survival and the difficult task of implementing change in a very traditional system.
Over the past three years, Boston University's Goldman School of Graduate Dentistry has undertaken such a challenge through a process of strategic planning. By examining the curriculum and the organizational structure of the school in relation to the external environment, faculty and administration developed new goals and objectives to respond to changes occurring in the field. The mission statement was revised to reflect a commitment to an expanded direction for the school.
