Abstract
Mucins are described as high molecular weight glycoproteins, which are considered
to be the major protein components for the body mucus. Mucins are secreted by epithelial
surfaces that line the reproductive , respiratory, gastrointestinal tracts. This lining or coat
cover can protect many vital structures in the oral cavity, digestive and respiratory systems.
The two major mucus secreting salivary glands, the sublingual and submandibular glands,
are capable of producing mucins although little is known about differences in the type of
mucins and amount that might be secreted by each gland. Therefore, the purpose of our
research was to compare the differential expression patterns of the mucins MUC 1, MUC4 ,
MUC5B , MUC7 and MUC 19 from the two major mucus secreting salivary glands in the oral
cavity. This investigation was divided in two stages. ln the first stage of this study we used conventional RT-PCR to assess the differential qualitative expression patterns for MUC I, MUC4, MUC5B, MUC7 and MUC 19 in the sub lingual and submandibular glands. The
results of the first stage showed MUC5B, MUC4 and MUC7 to be more abundantly
expressed in the sublingual gland than in the submandibular gland, and MUC 1 and MUC 19
to be more predominantly expressed in the submandibular gland compared to sublingual
gland. [TRUNCATED]
