Abstract
This experiment was devised to test the hypothesis that the organic material component of rat moral cementum is not a static material, but undergoes remodeling and replacement. Twenty-nine, 22 day old, male, albino rats received three intraperitoneal injections of 1 ml of Procion Red H-8BS dye, 100 mg/kg of rat weight, every other day for six days. After the last injection the animals were sacrificed at one week, and at one, two, three, and four months; and the mandibles were prepared for 500u ground sections. Within the limits of the experimental method, the results indicate that over the four month experimental period of this investigation, the matrical component of the cementum is a static material and does not undergo detectable turnover; it is not remodeled or replaced.
