Abstract
The purpose of this investigation is to determine in
a qualitative manner, the presence of a collagenolytic enzyme in teeth with lesions of endodontic origin.
A reconstituted collagen-gel substrate enzyme assay system was employed. Varying degrees of collagenolysis was noted and compared to known dilutions of bacterial collagenase. No correlation to clinical symptomology was attempted in this study. Candidates for this study consisted of the following:
(1) Eleven teeth which were candidates for periapical surgery.
(2) Ten teeth diagnosed as pulpless and in need of endodontic intervention.
(3) Four teeth with healthy pulps extracted for orthodontic purposes to serve as controls.
