Abstract
The purpose of this project is to assess the antimicrobial effectiveness of RC-2B paste on necrotic, infected canals, in light of the complexity of the root canal system, and the lack of complete debridement of necrotic and organic remnants from the system.
The material tested exhibited a bacteriocidal effect in its fresh state within the first forty-eight hours. With increasing time the material appeared to lose its antimicrobial effect to a degree that it was not observed to be bacteriostatic at a period of two weeks. The paraformaldehyde does not have the capability to produce a gas vapor that will disinfect the unfilled apical third of a root canal system.
The use of N-2 to fill root canals can be considered successful from a microbiological aspect in that if the system is filled to the apex the microorganisms present will be killed. This is not to condone the use of the material for it seems that the problem with the technique lies with the operator and not what he places in the system. More research needs to be done in the areas of tissue toxicity and sealing ability of the material.
