Abstract
The plaque pH values determined by the labial plaque of the six mandibular anterior teeth, and the salivary pH values were examined in vivo in seventy-five children made up of four distinct groups. Group I consisted of institutionalized mongoloids, group II consisted of home-bound mongoloids, group III was composed of institutionalized non-mongoloid mental retardates, and group IV consisted of home-bound normal children. The results were statistically evaluated with several variables including age and sex. Analysis of the data revealed a significant difference in the plaque pH values between the four groups; group I showing an average plaque pH of 6. 95, group l I 6.55, group III 6.66, and group IV 6.60. There was also a significant difference in the periodontal condition of the 30 four groups (Dufour ). The institutionalized and homebound mongoloids exhibited not only a higher or more alkaline plaque and salivary pH, but also a more severe periodontal condition. There was no significant difference when plaque and salivary pH values were compared to age and sex.
