Abstract
This was a study of the effect of pressure on the histology and rate of bone formation via oxytetracycline uptake of the median palatine suture in five nine-month-old to one-year-old experimental cats. Pressure was applied to the median palatine suture of the experimental cats via a fixed appliance which consisted of an O.I.S. fan-type expansion screw, which rested above the palatal mucosa, and four soldered arms, two per side, which extended from the expansion screw laterally along the palatal mucosa through the embrasure distal to the canine and onto the buccal surface of the maxilla. By drilling four holes in the buccal surface of the maxilla for the four arms of the appliance, stabilization was achieved. The appliance was activated by closing the screw which had been opened prior to appliance fabrication. [TRUNCATED]
