Abstract
This study involved a bacteriological investigation of the effect on plaque formation in seven adult male subjects of an experimental mouthwash (GP-101) as compared to the use of a placebo mouthwash. Following a thorough dental prophylaxis, the subjects refrained from toothbrushing the buccal surfaces of the lower anterior teeth for two periods of five days. During these test periods the remaining teeth were brushed in the customary manner. During the first 5-day period the subjects rinsed twice daily with a placebo mouthwash (CP-101P). During the second 5-day period the subjects rinsed twice daily for one minute each time with l5 mls of the experimental mouthwash.
The results showed that the use of CP-101 mouthwash (compared to the placebo) markedly reduced the amount of plaque that accumulated as judged by clinical observation and documented by intraoral photography. There was also an overall reduction in the wet weights of plaque harvested from the test teeth.
A significant difference between the use of CP-101 and CP-101P was noted, in that there was a marked increase in the number of bacteria per mg wet weight of plaque with the use of the active rinse. Therefore, there was an increase in bacterial density despite the reduction in the amount of plaque formed.
