Abstract
Many neurodivergent students are dysregulated during the school day, negatively impacting their participation in school occupations. Student dysregulation can also contribute to educator burnout, job dissatisfaction and attrition. EmpowerEd aims to increase educators’ knowledge, confidence, and attitudes toward neurodivergent students and improve students’ regulation and participation. EmpowerEd is designed and implemented by an occupational therapist to inspire change in school settings. The program’s content focuses on neurodiversity-affirming practice, inclusion, and disability justice in classrooms, utilizing a multi-method approach that includes reflective practice, group formats, and hands-on experimentation. Occupational therapists will work with educators to build their capacity to support neurodivergent students, positively impacting their school experience and futures. This innovative, occupation-based program, designed by an occupational therapist, will enhance educators’ occupational engagement at work and prevent occupational deprivation and marginalization of neurodivergent students at school.
