Abstract
Rain is pouring down from the sky and the mountains. Rays of pale light sift through the screens of water, making the sky look broken. Rain streams in masses from many layers of small, grey fragments of sky. Day after day, it never stops. The air is moist and hot, dense with transparent wings. A constant hum and buzz floats in and out of the small bamboo bar. Breathing gets difficult at times. It's the monsoon, they say. This is what the monsoon is like in the mountains. High up in the mountains at the North of Thailand, where the opium flowers grow. There aren't any flowers now. They only grow in November, in the dry season, when the air is cool and clear. There are pictures of them all around us, large, moist poppies, alluring in red luster...
