Abstract
It would be most desirable to the orthodontist to know what factors in orthodontic treatment would bring about a stable end result and what factors would lead to relapse. At the present time this remains highly unexplained. This study is an attempt to determine what effects the alteration in incisor inclination during treatment may have on the angular relapse of the incisor following the completion at active treatment. Forty-four cases were selected from the files of the Boston University School of Graduate Dentistry Department of Orthodontics. Lateral cephalometric radiographs taken prior to treatment, at the completion of active treatment, and at least one year subsequent to the completion of active treatment were analysed. A tendency for a return toward the original inclination among those instances in which the lower incisor inclination was increased toward the labial was noted. Angular relapse among instances in which the inclination of the lower incisor was decreased towards the lingual occurred less often and to a lesser degree. Overbite relapsed to the extent of 37% of the correction. Those instances exhibiting the greatest amount of overbite correction during treatment demonstrated the least percent relapse. Much variability was noted in regard to the angular relapse of the incisors. However, tendencies can be noted. An awareness of these tendencies along with the knowledge of the lack of predictability of a stable result in certain movements may be of value to the orthodontist in the selection of treatment procedures.
