Abstract
The purpose of this thesis was to give an account of the American lecture tour undertaken by Matthew Arnold in 1883, inncluding brief observations about his shorter visit to America in 1886. Three groups of material have indicated the trends of Arnold's influence on America: the subject matter of the lectures delivered on his tour, the contents of the essays and letters written about America, and American opinions of Arnold as expressed in books, periodicals, and newspapers.
The thesis included a discussion of Arnold's place in the cultural and creative world of his day to show why the lecture tour would be desired by Americans. His letters, up to the time of his going to America were discussed because they revealed the interests which he would naturally retain in America and through which he would judge and make comparisons.
