Abstract
This project was designed to determine and to compare the costs of providing dental care to Coast Guardmen on active duty and their dependents by a comparison of three different delivery modes: private practice (contracted dental care), fixed dental clinic (uniform service treatment facility), and mobile dental unit. The methodology was based on the consideration of direct and indirect expenses involved in providing dental care to the Coast Guard personnel. Results indicate that the cost per visit is lower in the mobile dental unit and highest in private practice. The difference was explained by the indirect expenses. However, the Coast Guard Dental Care Program will provide more efficiency if the three dental delivery systems can be utilized together.
