Abstract
In this 60-minute online workshop, residents adopt the role of a health professional from another discipline — such as a physical therapist, pharmacist, or social worker — to develop an assessment and plan for an older adult with Alzheimer's disease, then reconvene to share their perspectives in a simulated interprofessional team meeting.
Description
Facilitated, case-based interprofessional education and collaboration activity ("It Takes a Village") for 2–9 medical residents. In this 60-minute online workshop, participants adopt the perspective of a healthcare provider from a profession other than their own and apply that perspective to the care of Mr. Rodriguez, an 84-year-old man with moderate Alzheimer's disease, severe knee osteoarthritis, and weight loss. Participants explore the websites of professional organizations (physical therapy, nursing, nutrition, social work, occupational therapy, recreational therapy, wound care, geriatric pharmacy, and psychology specializing in dementia care), then reconvene to share input in a simulated, time-limited interprofessional team meeting. Learning objectives: explain the role of an interprofessional team in caring for an aging adult; describe caring for an aging adult from the perspective of a provider in a profession other than your own; list three ways that interprofessional collaboration benefits patients and caregivers.
