Abstract
Bacterial endotoxin has been implicated in the etiology of
periodontal inflammation. The purpose of this study was to determine the endotoxin content of sulcular fluid, plaque, gingival tissue and saliva, and to determine whether the amount measured is quantatatively related to the severity of inflammation. Specimens for testing endotoxin content were procured from 37 patients who presented with varying degrees of periodontal inflammation ranging from mild inflammatory states to severe inflammatory states. Also included in this study were patients who presented with the lesion of acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis. Periapical radiographs and standardized clinical photography provided addiitional survey and documentary data. The endotoxin content of these moieties was determined by the Limulus lysate technique which is capable of determining as little as .001 mcg of endotoxin. Findings indicated a statistically significant correlation between the endotoxin content in the moieties studied and the severity of the inflammatory state.
