Abstract
Externship programs have enabled dental students to gain clinical experience outside the dental school environment. Such externship programs are not a new concept in education. Medical schools have been using 'clerkships' to train students for many years.
Twelve years ago, Boston University Goldman School of Graduate Dentistry, developed a six-week externship program designed to provide the senior predoctoral student with intensive training in a variety of primary care settings. Prior to going out on externship-rotation, B.U. students complete a questionnaire which has them rank their competency, confidence, patient management skills and expectations regarding their externship. Upon return from the externship experience a post externship evaluation is filled out. Students are asked questions regarding their achievements when on externship in addition to ones pertaining to confidence, competence, anxiety, patient response, etc. This research paper, using statistical analysis of items on pre and post externship questionnaire from 1985-1989, will empirically show any changes that occurred in these students' perceptions, as well as, consistencies that remained in these perceptions of levels of confidence, competency, patient management skills, and fulfillment of externship expectations as revealed by their responses on their pre and post externship questionnaires.
The discussion section of the thesis attempts to discern whether B.U. dental students' perceptions of themselves have changed as a result of their externship experience. Also, by process of speculation, it further determines whether the student/preceptor relationship has had any correlation to these changes.
