Abstract
The purpose:of this study was to investigate and compare job satisfaction between private practice and public health dental hygienists. Using a matched-pair technique on established matching criteria, a random sample of fifteen private practice dental hygienists were matched to fifteen public health dental hygienist currently employed in the city of Boston. A 26 item pretested questionnaire was utilized to collect information from the hygienists with a telephone interview. Public health dental hygienists ranked independence and challenge the most satisfying aspects of their present position, whereas salary and relationship with employer were ranked as the most dissatisfying aspects of their work. Private practive dental hygienists ranked patient contact and use of motor skills as the most satisfying aspects of their work, whereas routine and lack of challenge were ranked as the most dissatisfying aspects of their work. There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups for hours worked per week, number of patients per day, and time allotted for adult and children patients. Both groups indicated dissatisfaction with salary. It was concluded that public health dental hygienists are more satisfied with their jobs than private practice dental hygienists.
