Abstract
Description
This collection presents an overview of the VA Bedford Geriatric Medicine GME rotation, implemented from 2017–2023 in a Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) unit and Community Living Center. The curriculum was designed to influence the dynamic interplays between patient, faculty, and learner within the clinical learning environment (CLE). Learning outcomes address Age-Friendly™ healthcare (Geriatrics 5Ms), interprofessional education and collaboration, and mindful awareness. Program evaluation of 53 internal medicine, family medicine, and subspecialty geriatrics trainees (2021–2022) demonstrated a 57% improvement in confidence in interprofessional collaboration, improved knowledge, and improved attitudes. Purposeful instructional design and optimization of trainees' cognitive load were identified as critical success factors. Subacute rehabilitation and long-term care settings are presented as underutilized clinical learning environments for geriatric education and interprofessional teaming.
