Abstract
In order to study the effect of ion pairing on nucleophilic reactivity and to help determine the sequence of nucleophilicity of the halide anions, the kinetics of displacement reaction between p-nitrobenzyl bromide and ionophoric chlorides labeled with chlorine-36 was studied in liquid sulfur dioxide at 0 C. Potassium chloride, rubidium chloride, tetramethylammonium chloride and tetraethylammonium chloride were employed asionophores. The concentration of the ionophores except for potassium chloride was varied over a wide range in order to evaluate the kinetic role of ion pairing.
