Abstract
An in vitro investigation into the feasibility of using lased human hydroxyapatite as a retrograde filling material.
Several extracted human teeth had their apical preparations filled with condensed hydroxyapatite and subjected to a Carbon Dioxide Surgical Laser. These teeth were then examined with high power light microscope and a scanning electron microscope. Amalgam was used as a control.
S.E.M. results show that the laser has a limited depth of penetration into the added hydroxyapatite. There is a thin, brittle crust formed at the point of laser impact. Beyond this crust, there is minimal recrystallization of the hydroxyapatite. Without recrystallization, there are significant voids visible in the added hydroxyapatite. SEM also shows no fusion of the preparation wall dentin and the hydroxyapatite filling.
Under the conditions of this study, lased hydroxyapatite retrograde fillings are not feasible when compared to amalgam.
