Abstract
Massachusetts communities are ordered by Chapter 71, section 34 of the General Laws of Massachusetts to provide funds for the support of the public schools. The courts of Massachusetts have interpreted this to mean that the communities must provide the sum of money requested by the local school committee with the exception of funds for transportation. In a number of instances communities have refused to appropriate the total amount requested by the school committee. This refusal has often resulted in taxpayers' suits to have the courts order the community to provide the requested money. The problem of the study was to determine the value of court action to compel a community to appropriate the funds requested by the school committee. [TRUNCATED]
