Abstract
Faithful recordings of mandibular movements have long been considered important deteminants for establishing occlusion in fixed prosthodontics. Several mandibular tracing devices claim to accurately reproduce mandibular movements in three dimensions. These recordings are transferred to an articulator which in tum accurately reproduces the movements generated by the patient. The objective of this study was to determine whether recordings from various recording devices for fully adjustable, analog, and semi-adjustable articulators are similar to the recordings obtained from in vivo recordings.
A mandibular tracking device, the Saphon Visi-Trainer (SVT) is capable of displaying, recording and memorizing mandibular movements by means of a light emitting diode (LED) atthe incisal point in a horizontal, sagittal, and frontal plane. The tracings can be magnified on an oscilloscope or printed on graph paper from one to five times. Ten asymptomatic patients were selected for this study. Repeated recordings were obtained in the three mentioned reference planes. A comparison of mandibular movements on 10 patients and the reproducibility of these movements on four different articulators was made.
It can be concluded fromthis study that the classical Gothic arch tracings in a horizontal plane are easily and faithfully reproduced. Posselt’s envelope of motion allowed analysis in a sagittal plane. In addition, 1ateral excusions can be analyzed in a frontal plane.
The significant two-way interaction between type of plane and device was followed up by performing three-way repeated measures Analysis of Variances (ANOVAs) for each plane, using the type of device as a factor. The F-tests for type of device within the horizontal plane was statistically significant (F = 14.58, P [less than] .001); the F-tests within the sagittal and frontal planes were not significant.
