Abstract
Sixty pulpotomies were performed on the teeth of two dogs at intervals of 7, 42, 57 and 62 days. Teeth were divided into two groups. Teeth in the first group, 30 in number, each received a five minute formocresol pulpotomy followeed by a dressing of IRM and an amalgam restoration. Pulpotomies were also performed on the remaining teeth (30) in which one drop of formocresol was incorporated into the subbase material (IRM), and placed directly over the pulp stumps after controlling hemorrhage. This was followed by amalgam restorations. There was no initial five minute application of formocresol with this later procedure. Approximately forty percent of the teeth were sectioned for histological analysis. The result showed that in both groups there was initial penetration of formocresol into the pulp tissue resulting in fixation of tissue at the coronal level and vital tissue at the apex site. The results also showed that both techniques gave a certain degree of variability of findings, which included: a homogeneous fixed tissue near the amputation site, an inf|amatory infiltrate, dentin deposition, internal resorption, vital tissue at the apex site sometimes with or without bone deposition and or fibrosis. Seven day specimens exhibited a greater degree of inflamation (hyperemia and partial pulpitis) than the 42, 57 and 62 day specimens as a result of the immediate action of formocresol. These preliminary findings indicated that the incorporation of formocresol into the subbase material (IRM), at least on a short term basis (up to 62 days), gave similar results to those observed in the five minute formocresol pulpotomy technique.
