Abstract
To assess the contribution of the neural input of the fifth cranial nerve on growth of the mandible, two groups of ten 5 day old albino rats were subjected to unilateral neurotmesis. In one group the masseteric muscles was denervated while in another group the inferior alveolar nerve was resected. A histologic examination was made of the masseteric muscle to document the extent of denervation. The mandibles in each of these groups were compared anatomically and anthropometrically with their respective sham operated animals and with one non-operated control group. Tetracycline was administered to study the growth pattern at maturity.
Ten weeks post-op the findings showed a mandibular deviation to the affected side after resection of the masseteric nerve. Gross and histologic evidence of atrophy of the masseteric muscle was observed. In addition the results showed a significant difference in various linear dimensions of the mandible in both experimental groups.
