Manifest Personality Needs and Triadic Interaction

Abstract
Literature concerning the process and structure of triadic human groups has concerned itself largely with the variable of power. There has been little work in this area concerned with the relationship of aspects of personality of the members of the group and their possible relationship to the behavior occurring in the group.
This study was concerned with the relationship of some particular patterns of manifest personality needs and their relationship to triadic human interaction.
Three predictions were made at the outset of the study.
1. It was predicted that in groups composed of two people who possessed particular similar needs to the same degree and a third person who did not, the two who did would pair.
2. It was predicted that in groups composed of two people who possessed particular complementary needs to the same degree and a third person who did not, the two who did would pair.
3. It was predicted that statements of preference for each other by the group members made after the session would accord with the actual behavior demonstrated by the members during the session.
