Abstract
Topical corticosteroids are among the most utilized medications in the field of dermatology and are used for a variety of dermatological conditions. While the adverse reactions are widely studied, there is insufficient research on the collection of symptoms loosely termed Topical Steroid Withdrawal that include but are not limited to burning, itching, shedding, and erythema that often extend beyond the site of application of topical corticosteroids. A better understanding of prevalence, symptoms, and therefore prevention is necessary to improve patient outcomes. Data from preliminary studies suggests an increase in adverse effects with prolonged use of the topical corticosteroids beyond the advised treatment plan. This proposed project will determine whether standardized counseling for the proper use of topical corticosteroids improves adherence to the treatment plan, with the hopes that improved compliance leads to better patient outcomes and reduced adverse effects.
