The experience of music in group work

Abstract
I have found it expedient to start a group's experience in music with Jazz, for it is that is that phase of music with which individuals are most likely to be familiar. We start with a rhythm band and interpolated discussion of rhythm and Jazz, and then make a transition to Gilbert and Sullivan through singing. When we return to the rhythm band, the group creates arrangements for the band with related discussions of form and conduction. Simple score reading is taken up, and singing by note reading takes place. At about this time, the group is ready to be divided into those who prefer to sing and those who want to go on with the history and appreciation.
An attempt should also be made to carry over active participation in other forms of art, with the underlying idea of the relationships of all arts.
