Abstract
The thesis' purpose is to examine, and insofar as is possible, explain the attitudes taken by the Atlantic Monthly towards such problems of the years 1857-1865, as slavery, domestic politics, foreign affairs, and secession. In addition the thesis makes literary evaluations of certain writers, editors, and contributions to the Atlantic.
