Abstract
Neurodivergent children, including children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often struggle with components of executive function (EF), play, and self-regulation. Executive functioning skills organize thoughts and behavior from start to finish; they include components such as attention, cognitive flexibility, problem solving, organization, planning, impulse control, reflection, prioritization, emotional regulation, and materials management. Parents of autistic children report high levels of stress and difficulty engaging their children in play and socialization. Storytelling can be used as a tool to enhance executive function (including skills of reflection, creativity, and problem-solving). The Story Model of Executive Function for Occupational Therapy Practitioners (OTPs) was developed to connect executive function to storytelling through brain science and theory. Storytelling is used broadly to describe an occupation of self-expression that promotes wellbeing, values, and identity.
Super Me, Super You, AnyBODY can be a SUPERbody, an interactive card game, facilitates executive function skills through the means of self-regulatory storytelling, character modeling, role play, scripting, and visual support. OTPs will be trained to enhance playful storytelling and understand executive function/pediatric creative intervention processes through a certification process. Constructivism, cognitive behavioral theory, sensory integration, and the Zookeepers program inform the game and training design. The game is beneficial as both a support to individualized occupational therapy in the clinic as well as a home exercise program tool; the success of the game and training will be measured through pre/posttest surveys and Canadian Occupational Performance Measure scores.
This executive function training program, Kid Power, and clinical tool, Super Me, Super You, AnyBODY can be a SUPERbody, for OTPs and their neurodivergent clients address a vital gap area — the use of executive function and creativity in occupational therapy practice.
