Abstract
Beginning with Arrhenius' Theory of Ionization various other theories of conductance have been reviewed with particular regard to their application to the phenomenon of ion pairing. These include the Ostwald Dilution Law, Fuoss-Kraus, Shedlovsky and the recent Fuoss-Onsager Conductance Equations. Special emphasis is given to the basic differences between the latter two equations, as it is intended to determine the extent to which these equations furnish different values of the limiting conductance ^0 and the ion pair association constant K4 from identical conductance data.
Accordingly, the conductance data obtained by P. Pappas (Boston University) for the following five ionophoric systems in liquid sulfur dioxide were analyzed: triphenylmethyl perchlorate at 0.17 and -25.4C and tetraethylammonium bromide, tetra-n-propylammonium iodide, and methylpyridinium picrate at 0.17C. Shedlovsky ^o and Ka values and their estimated standard deviations had previously been obtained for these systems by the method of least squares; it, therefore, remained only to compute the Fuoss-Onsager counterparts by the least squares method.
