Abstract
In the Spring of 1978 the Boston Indian Council (BIC) was awarded a contract to begin Phase I of a multi-phasic health care program for the urban Indian population in the Boston area. In compliance with the Urban Specific Health Plan guidelines and in response to the recommendations from the past Henry M. Goldman School of Graduate Dentistry, Boston University graduate students' projects an urban Specific Dental Health Plan was designed and implemented as part of the overall comprehensive health plan for Boston's urban Indians.
The dental component of the Urban Specific Health Plan consisted of three sections: 1) A dental survey and oral health assessment to document the oral needs of an urban Indian community, 2) The identification of available and accessible dental facilities, 3) The development of a referral system that will deliver services to the urban Indian population in Boston.
The goals of this plan were to gather urban baseline data, to identify available and accessible dental facilities for the Indian population in the Boston area and to develop a referral system whereby an available source of dental care was accessible and affordable. The project has stimulated great dental demand and awareness in the Indian population and its surrounding community.
