Abstract
The purpose of this investigation was to study the redevelopment of the blood supply of free gingival grafts, in dogs, and to detennine how the graft is nurtured prior to redevelopment of a true circulation. The preparation of the recipient site, in attached gingiva of premolar and molar areas, was done by sharp dissection of gingiva to its periosteal aspect. Split-thickness grafts (approximately 1 mm. in thickness), circa 4 x 8 mm. in size, taken fran attached gingiva of canine areas, were then sutured on the prepared bed. The animals were sacrificed immediately after surgery and at varying intervals of time up to twenty days. Aproximately fifteen minutes prior to sacrifice, the animals were vitally perfused, bilaterally, through the cam1on carotid arteries, at existing arterial blood pressure. A filtered carbon black suspension (Pelikan Ink, Gunther Wagner) and a 1% solution of Patent blue Violet, a diffusible dye, canprised the perfusate. This permitted the delineation of the blood supply and its permeability in undecalcified cleared and decalcified histologic specimens. [TRUNCATED]
