Abstract
Postpartum Depression is a pervasive issue that often goes undetected and undertreated. Due to stigma, financial concerns, lack of support, and improper screening many new parents are falling through the cracks. The lack of recognition and treatment of postpartum depression has grave consequences, not only to the parent suffering, but also to the child’s development, physical health and the parental-child bond. Currently, this issue disproportionately affects marginalized communities creating a cycle of lack of support and resources for parents of color, parents with lack of financial stability, and single parents. While prior studies have aimed at improving access to and accuracy of screening, few have focused on the specific population that needs it the most. Using a mobile screening tool will not only increase access to screening for new parents who cannot physically make it into their appointments but also allow for increased frequency of screening and more privacy while completing the screen. This paper will explore the feasibility, implementation, and possible impact this tool can have on pregnant and postpartum patients at Boston Medical Center.
