Abstract
This investigation was designed to ascertain the quality, distribution, and extent of alterations in the attachment apparatuses of occlusally-splinted posterior teeth produced by sustained increases in the occlusal vertical dimension.
Cast gold occlusal splints were attached by randomly oriented anchoring pins (T.M.S.) to the posterior maxillary and mandibular dentitions of 7 rhesus monkeys. Specimens, derived from 15 and 55 day experimental subjects, were studied in stained (H-E and Mallory trichrome) and cleared, thick (circa 500 u)sections. After heparinization and prior to sacrifice with 5% pentobarbital overdosage, each animal was vitally perfused via the common carotid arteries on a
bilateral basis with carbon-black suspension (Gunther Wagner) and diffusible dye, patent blue V, 1% aqueous, to ascertain both normal and altered vasodistribution and permeability (see Ruben, M. Gross, radiologic, and h1stologic evaluations of jaw specimens indicated that traumatic lesions were induced in the attaching structures of all teeth included within the fixed splints. Manifestations of traumatism included (1) intrusion of teeth with progressive decreases in occlusal vertical dimension (circa 50% in 55 days) (2) resorption of periodontal ligament and alveolar and supporting bone at axial, apical and interradicular sites (3) inconsistent tipping lesions related to mandibular posterior teeth (4) generally appositional tissue responses at crestal phases of attachment apparatus.
