Abstract
Objectives: The aim of this study is to examine the association between tooth whitener use and oral cancer. This study also aims to describe tooth whitener use in our study population.
Methods: The study design was a case-control study with cases and controls identified from the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine. Cases were defined as patients diagnosed between 1999 and 2004, with oral squamous cell carcinoma, or oral cancer of the tongue, gingiva, floor of the mouth, oropharynx, hypopharynx and other sites within the lips and oral cavity. Controls were defined as patients with a diagnosis of radicular cyst. Data collection was done by a self-administered mailed questionnaire. The questionnaire asked structured as well as open ended questions pertaining to the subjects’ demographics, detailed use of mouth rinses, history of alcohol and tobacco use, self-perceived oral health, use of dentures, and tooth whitener use. The data collected was analyzed using Epi-info 3.3.2 and SAS 8. Frequencies for categorical variables, means for the continuous variables, bivariate analyses and multiple logistic regression analyses were performed.
