Abstract
Historically, most dental school curricula have been primarily concerned with restorative dentistry, rather than prevention. Adding a preventive dentistry program to the curriculum is valuable not only to the profession, but also to the dental consumer. Dentists will be more likely to utilize preventive dentistry in their practices if they are exposed to prevention philosophies and techniques while they are in dental school. Preventive dentistry also fosters an awareness of the total patient, with individual health care needs. Preventive dentistry provides immediate and long range benefits to patients through patient education and regular maintenance and follow-up of care. The literature describes that a successful preventive dentistry program consists of several preventive dentistry components including a school wide commitment to prevention, a preventive dentistry department or coordinator, a preventive dentistry curriculum with didactic and clinical components, and a recall system. This project laid the groundwork for a comprehensive preventive dentistry program for the predoctoral students at the Boston University Goldman School of Graduate Dentistry. The preventive dentistry program, as designed, consists of a preventive dentistry curriculum integrated into each of the four years, and the development of a Prevention Center where preventive and recall services can be delivered. An Ad Hoc Committee on Preventive Dentistry has been established to assist in the development and implementation of this project. It is hoped that both faculty and administration will take an active part in insuring the adoption of this preventive dentistry program into the dental school system.
